Remembrance Day

This year we will not be able to gather together in one space for our Remembrance Day Ceremony, but we have decided to work as a school to create presentations for a video that students will be able to watch on the day of the ceremony. Our class is working with Mr. Christie's class and Ms. Sherdahl's class to share the poem "In Flanders Field". We have asked students to work at home on reading the poem and memorizing as much as they are able.   Here is the poem: In Flanders Fields BY  JOHN MCCRAE In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row,     That mark our place; and in the sky     The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below. We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,     Loved and were loved, and now we lie,         In Flanders fields. Math This week we moved onto subtraction in math. We looked at using Base Ten blocks as a strategy for solving problems. We were able to represent borrowing and regrouping with the blocks to find the solutions. Take Me Outside This week we celebrated " Take Me Outside" day by going outside twice. We played a full class soccer game and built snow structures in the snow. This has been a great year for getting outside and learning in different ways. Social Studies We have started to explore the idea of quality of life. We brainstormed things that would impact our quality of life like education, healthcare, transportation, government, food, water, shelter and jobs. We reflected on our own quality of life to see how all the pieces fit together to make us feel safe and secure. Art We are starting to explore colour and how we can use it intentionally to share messages and emotion in our art. We started with learning about the colour wheel today. Text Features We started to look at t

Math   This week we continued out work with addition in math - focusing on the stacked or traditional strategy. Next week we will move onto subtraction.  Grade 3s completed both sections of the math SLA as well.  Grade 4s worked on solving a low floor high ceiling problem by breaking the problem down, discussing what they think, and looking for patterns. Science Grade 3s began an experiment with salt today, following the scientific method. They worked to create reasonable a hypothesis with a reason.  Grade 4s read about the kaleidoscope and then created their own using everyday materials. They were focusing on how light interacts with reflective surfaces and translucent objects. Big Concepts We have been looking at the idea of "Geology" and are just about to wrap up our class concept map. We have started to look at "The Land" and "The People". We have made some connections between the land and geology, and this week looked at what is culture and what is a

Coulee Trip (Sept. 29)

This past week we took our first trip to the coulee. When we arrived we read through the Acknowledgement of the Land. We split into some smaller groups for our exploration.  The grade 4s talked about the purpose of the Acknowledgement and began to look for things on the land that are a value to us and compared them with things that communities is the far past would have valued on the same land. Grade 3s explored the Porcupine rock formation and looked at different sedimentary rock formations that can be found all through the coulee. They talked about the rock cycle and aspects of sedimentary rocks.
