Fractions

"We did a word problem how we can split 1-10 fractions into 1/2. All the ones in the middle were the answer." Charlie

Cuisinaire Rods

"We each got a group and we had these Cuisinaire rods which are like ten rods but they are 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1. We had to make a picture with them then we had to count up what the value was all together. Then after that we had to draw our character or whatever we made we had to draw" Makena

"We used addition and multiplication to see how much our picture was worth." Jumana


Coding

"We went into Google Classroom and there was a website called Code.org and we would have videos for each lesson and then we would make our character and make it do a move and things like that." Aria

"Each level there would be different blocks to make your character move differently. The first block you got was a character. The higher the level the more difficult the levels would be to code." Jake


Community Research

"We would go to Google Classroom and then go to text collections and you would go to travel and find your country and try to find facts. Grade 3s has Tunisia, India, Peru and Ukraine. They would research it and have to do celebrations and events and traditions" Evelyn

"For the grade 4s, we were given a city that was located somewhere in Alberta and given 3 or 4 important people and pick one and we had to research them." Colton

Space Tomatoes

"On Wednesday we started a new science project called Space Tomatoes. We had to make charts. After we made the chart we planted the tomatoes." Ege

"We had different letter packages. One or two of them could be space tomatoes. We don't know which one is space and which one is from our planet." Scott

  Upcoming Dates Grade 4  Health lessons begin next week Grade 4  June 17 - Walk to TMC June 18 - Fun Treat Day (Order by June 11) Design Challenge Grade 3 and 4 have been working on a design challenge to wrap up our work with building and testing. They are working in groups and given a scenario about a crisis in a community (Peru, India, Ukraine, Tunisia) that effects the quality of life of its citizens. Each scenario involves needing to get people across a body of water to access community supports. They worked together on initial research and brainstorming of options. Next they split into grade groups and were assigned a specific set of criteria for their design. Grade 3s will be designing a bridge and grade 4s will be designing a machine with gears and pulleys.  Seed Research We also started a research project this week around seeds. Students are working in groups to learn about a specific food product that is exported by Peru, India, Ukraine and Tunisia. Grade 4 students are focus

Math   This week we continued out work with addition in math - focusing on the stacked or traditional strategy. Next week we will move onto subtraction.  Grade 3s completed both sections of the math SLA as well.  Grade 4s worked on solving a low floor high ceiling problem by breaking the problem down, discussing what they think, and looking for patterns. Science Grade 3s began an experiment with salt today, following the scientific method. They worked to create reasonable a hypothesis with a reason.  Grade 4s read about the kaleidoscope and then created their own using everyday materials. They were focusing on how light interacts with reflective surfaces and translucent objects. Big Concepts We have been looking at the idea of "Geology" and are just about to wrap up our class concept map. We have started to look at "The Land" and "The People".   Upcoming Events May 5 - Hats on for Mental Health. Wear a hat to show your support for mental health (no silly hats please) May 7 - Last Sound Kreations Hearing and Sound Grade 3 students have been working with Mrs. Glowacki to design instruments. Students have been hard at work creating their masterpieces. Their final instrument needs to change pitch and volume. French Grade 4 students have been working on learning about seasons and weather. They have begun putting together statements to answer questions about what the weather is like in each season. "Quel temp fait il en hiver? Il fait froid." Math Students are wrapping up an exploration of fractions with some work with Cuisinaire Rods.
